Picacho Hills Ranch of New Mexico

Nestled in the Picacho Hills below the Capitan Mountains at altitudes ranging from approximately 4,500 to 5,500 feet, the 19,000-acre McCrea Picacho Hills Ranch is a working cattle ranch and home to healthy populations of barbary sheep, mule deer, and quail, among many other species of wildlife.  This historic Lincoln County ranch boasts such previous owners as the famed first captain of the Arizona Rangers Captain Burton Mossman, legendary cattleman J.B. Morris, and most recently the founder of Atlantic Richfield Company (better known as ARCO), Robert O. Anderson.  The ranch is also situated along the historic trail from John Chisum’s ranch headquarters near Roswell and the town of Lincoln, site of the Lincoln County War in which the likes of Billy the Kid became infamous figures of history.

Purchased from Robert O. Anderson in 1992 with the help of his parents, Hollywood actors Joel McCrea and Frances Dee, ranch owner David McCrea moved his family to the Picacho Hills Ranch from a ranch on the Pecos River east of Roswell.  Attracted by the abundance of blue grama and side oats grama grasses, David also enjoyed the cooler air and more generous rains afforded by being closer to the mountains.

The Picacho Hills Ranch’s livestock and hunting operation is currently managed by David’s son, Robert Joel McCrea (who also serves the Roswell community as a lawyer and accountant with the firm of Hennighausen & Olson).

If hunters elect to stay at the ranch, the Ranch is capable of housing and feeding up to 8 hunters.
